Underground Factory – Albis-Werke G.m.b.H Leitmeritz and
Elbschloss Brewery in Litoměřice: History and Production

Elbschloss Brewery (During WW2 – ALBIS WERKE) , located in Litoměřice, has a fascinating history that began in 1858 when it was established as the Litoměřice Brewery Company near the Elbschloss (Leitmeritzer Bierbraugesellschaft zum Elbschloss A.G). This modern industrial brewery became one of the first in the region and contributed to the development of the local economy over the years.

War Period: From Beer to Component Production

During World War I, the brewery faced shortages of raw materials and labor, negatively affecting its production. After the war, operations resumed at full capacity. However, in 1940, the brewery ceased beer production, with the last batch brewed in May of that year, and by June, all equipment had been sold.

In 1942, a significant transformation took place when the brewery was repurposed into refrigeration facilities and renamed the Elbschloss Administrative Joint-Stock Company. A new company, Sudeten Refrigeration, was established, focusing on malt extract production and other food industry products. During this period, the brewery became part of Albis-Werke G.m.b.H, a branch of a Berlin-based company specializing in aircraft components and military equipment manufacturing.

Post-War Period and Present Day

After the end of World War II, Sudeten Refrigeration, which was German-owned, was placed under national administration on May 24, 1945, and renamed Elbschloss Enterprises Litoměřice. These enterprises later evolved into the national company Litoměřice Freezing Plants, which operated until 1996, when it was privatized and subsequently used by various companies for different purposes.

In 2005, the demolition of the site began, and in 2006, the complex was affected by a fire. Today, the brewery area stands in a state of decay. Although there have been proposals for revitalization, no concrete steps have been taken to restore it.

Conclusion

The Elbschloss Brewery in Litoměřice serves as a fascinating example of a historical industrial site shaped by various historical events. From its origins as a key part of the local economy to its role in military production during wartime, the brewery’s story reflects the shifting tides of history. Today, though abandoned, it remains an important part of Litoměřice’s industrial heritage, with potential for future revitalization and repurposing.
